What is Child Support?

Child support is the financial contribution one parent makes to the other to help cover the costs of raising a child after separation. This may include expenses such as:

  • Food, clothing, housing

  • School fees and education costs

  • Medical and health-related needs

  • Extra-curricular activities

The aim is to ensure both parents contribute fairly to their children’s upbringing, regardless of who the child lives with.

How is Child Support Calculated?

In Australia, most child support payments are assessed and managed by Services Australia (Child Support) using a formula that considers:

  • Each parent’s income

  • The number of children

  • The amount of time each parent cares for the children

Child support is separate from parenting arrangements and child custody matters, although the level of care each parent provides can affect a Services Australia assessment.

Parents can also agree to private arrangements, either informally or through a Binding Child Support Agreement or Limited Child Support Agreement—which our lawyers in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast can draft and review to ensure fairness and legal compliance.

LIMITED CHILD SUPPORT AGREEMENTS
A less formal option that can be registered with Services Australia but does not require legal advice to enter.

We help you understand which option is best suited to your circumstances.
